Cranial Radio

January 24, 2006

Today, it's an ITunes broadcast. I've been loading disks like crazy, which gives me an idiosyncratic sampling of what I listen to. This broadcast, taken directly from what came up when I hit shuffle, is a pretty good mix of old and new, or at least new-ish. Forthwith, the songs, plus a comment or two:

Beck, "Devil's Haircut" (Odelay) Still a classic recording with that great grungy opening riff.

Suzanne Vega, "As a Child" (99.9° F.) A song with a kind of pennywhistle lilt to it--whistling in the dark.

The Clash, "Jimmy Jazz" (London Calling) The Clash always bust up the joint a little.

Jackson Browne, "Take It Easy" (Solo Acoustic, Vol. 1) Here's a blast from my youth, even though this is a recent recording. I always liked Jackson Browne's more mournful take on this song, versus the Eagles' more pop/mainstream version.

Velvet Underground, "The Black Angel's Death Song" (Velvet Underground and Nico) Listen to the Velvets for the sound of attenuated excess.

Van Morrison, "Stranded" (Magic Time) I think it's hard for listeners to Van Morrison these days must think he's just an easy listening chestnut. And it's true, I think you've got to listen hard to hear how heavy this voice ultimately is. Definitely worth the listen, though.

Elton John, "Weight of the World" (Peachtree Road) Elton does pretty good work these days. Another artist from the soundtrack of my youth.

Bob Dylan, "On the Road Again" (Bringing it All Back Home) Not the Willie Nelson rambler--it's Dylan, rabble-rousing.

John Lennon, "Steel and Glass" (Walls and Bridges) I personally like this recording, though some people think it's no good. Take a listen for yourself.

Ryan Adams, "Enemy Fire" (Gold) I read an interview with Mr. Adams that made him sound like a self-important pompous blowhard. But who's counting? He's still a true rock and roller.
