The SLCC Archaeological Field School at Range Creek The Range Creek Archaeological Project is part of a large, multi-year project designed to identify and document archaeological sites in a spectacular, remote desert canyon near Price, Utah. Range Creek is a tributary of the Green River, and is similar to nearby Ninemile Canyon. Approximately 145 archaeological sites were identified and recorded during the 2002 and 2003 field seasons. Hundreds of Fremont archaeological sites that have not yet been recorded include adobe and masonry granaries, pithouse villages, caches and cists in rockshelters, and amazing rock art panels. Most sites date to the Fremont period, AD 500-1350, although some rock art may be Archaic. During the 2004 field season, crews from the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College will be identifying and recording sites through surveys, mapping large village sites, and conducting test excavations to investigate the lifeways of past cultures. Sponsors of the Range Creek Archaeological Project include the State of Utah, the Bureau of Land Management, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, the Utah Rock Art Research Association, the Utah Division of State History, Uintah Research, the Univerity of Utah Archaeological Center, the Utah Museum of Natural History, and Salt Lake Community College.
