Course Description: This course offers an introduction to anthropology, the

and differences of diverse cultures throughout the world.
Course Focus: This course focuses mainly on cultural anthropology, including traditional institutions in various human societies worldwide. Following a brief introduction to the four fields of anthropology (cultural, physical, archaeology, linguistics), issues fundamental to the human experience are explored through readings, films and class discussions. Important topics include human evolution, language, subsistence, trade, reproduction, marriage, kinship, warfare, and the origins of agriculture and "civilization", religion and art.
Course Evaluation: Attendance is mandatory, although points are not given for attendance. Failure to attend class regularly may affect your grade in the course. All readings are mandatory. One copy each of Nanda/Warms Cultural Anthropology and Annual Editions 03/04 are on reserve in the South City Campus library. Final grades for the course are based on scores received on three multiple choice exams worth 100 points each and a final project worth 100 points. Exam study guides will be available the week before an exam, and a review session will be held during the last class preceding the exam. Makeup exams may be available in emergency situations, but consist of all essay questions. You will need to present a current student id card to take each exam. Combined scores of 240 total points, or 60%, are required to pass the course.
